The Dhammapada: The Sayings of the Buddha by Thomas Byrom

The Dhammapada: The Sayings of the Buddha shared in this book by Thomas Byrom, are presented in an understandable, simple, and lyrical way. The main message is that all suffering stems from desire and that the way to attain freedom is to purify the heart and follow the way of truth.

Words that feed the soul are words of wisdom, not knowledge and they must be heard by the soul, not the intellect.

The Dhamma, writes Byrom, are words of purity and of simplicity to liberate the mind from the intellect which entraps, while that which feeds the soul, liberates.

Dhamma is the ‘manas’ or mental objects, in the sense of what grasps the mental constructs of thought processes.

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.

The Pali Dhammapada contains 423 verses in 26 chapters. The Chapters include titles including:

One is one’s own refuge, what other refuge
can there be?? With self well subdued,
one finds a refuge such as few can find.

The World

Rouse yourself, be diligent, in Dhamma
faring well. who dwells in Dhamma
is happy in this birth and the next.

The Buddha–The Awakened

Not to commit any sin, to do good, and
governance of one’s mind, that is the
teaching of (all) the Awakened

Twin Verses

All that we are is the result of what we have thought:
it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts.
If one speaks and acts with an evil thought, pain follows,
as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage.

If one speaks and acts with a pure thought, happiness follows
like a shadow that never leaves…

For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by love, this is an eternal rule.

The Just

… the ones who distinguish both right and wrong, who is learned and leads others, not by violence, but by law and equity, and who is guarded by the law and intelligence…

The Way

All forms are unreal,’ one who knows and sees this becomes passive in pain; this is the way that leads to purity.
