Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem by Gloria Steinem

You have come here to find what you already have.

Buddhist aphorism

For decades, Gloria Steinem has led a social revolution against injustice. In Revolution from Within she sets out to restore the self-authority that such injustice has undermined — in men as well as women, across boundaries of race, class, age, sexuality, and ability.

There is always one inner voice. Trust it.

Gloria Steinem

Steinem uses stories from her own life and the lives of others to illustrate the many connections between the personal and the political, offering readers lessons on how to bring down all barriers to equality — both external and internal.

I worshipped dead men for their strength, forgetting I was strong.
— Vita Sackville-West

And, it was true, writes Steinem. She had lost her voice comparing this to walking on a plate of glass just above the real world, able to see but not touch it. She began to understand with a terrible sureness that we teach what we need to learn and write what we need to know. I am also drawn to the subject of self-esteem (in research and writing) not only because other people needed it but because I did as well.

Revolution from within away from co-dependency

Steinem conveys unravelling an awareness that she had come to the burnt-out end of her ability to travel one kind of feverish, productive, but entirely eternalized road. But, she had no idea why.

In therapy, she realized she had a more immediate crisis. If you want to imagine what might be called a “situational” or perhaps a “traumatic” self-esteem problem, think about it as being co-dependent with the world. And, with this, our own feelings become buried or non-existent in the doubting of the reality of our own inner voices.

The revolution from within is a re-grouping and transformation. We enter a spiral of concentric circles that move from the center (the self) to the cosmos (or whatever term for consciousness or spirituality you prefer). The evolution of being-in-this-world is a joint product of the observer and the observed (Teilhard de Chardin) and the result is a constant spiralling back and forth between the inner world and the out one, between self and circumstance. Nature doesn’t move in a straight line, and as part of nature, neither do we.

Sparking recognition and encouragement for personal growth

Revolution from Within has a special sweetness — that of triumph.

Gloria Steinem dared to look behind the bravely smiling face she presented to the world for many years to encounter a not-so-bravely-smiling inner self.

This meeting will strike sparks of recognition and encouragement.
